Red Heart Free Crochet Peppermint Christmas Throw + Tutorial

I was floored when I first saw the Crochet Peppermint Afghan in the summer of 2014. Designed by Bendy Carter, this afghan is so incredible that it inspired me beyond belief. I knew instantly this was an afghan a crocheter could fall in love with.

The looks are a bit deceiving as you may think you need to make 42 large motifs and be done with it. While all motifs are the same from rounds 1 - 11, the final round is different. Motifs have been assigned a number between 1 - 6. The edging is changed so the spirals can appear twisting instead of all 42 motifs being the same. However, if you were to do all 42 motifs with the same edging, I don't think it's a deal-breaker.

Yarn Requirements

Red Heart Soft, 5 oz / 141 g, 256 yds / 234 m.

  • White 10 balls - Contrast A (Yarn Total for Colour. 50 oz, 1410 g / 2560 yds, 2340 m)
  • Really Red - 6 Balls - Contrast B (Yarn Total for Colour. 30 oz, 846 g / 1536 yds, 1404 m)

Due to the complexity of the layers and the 6 different edges, I felt it appropriate to make a workbook. I have provided a link to it below. You are welcome to save it, download it and or print it.

We also have a gallery of afghans completed by Crochet Crowd Community Members. You can see what colour combinations they came up with here. Visit the Peppermint Photo Gallery.

Mikey's Notes Workbook

I was super inspired by this afghan that I took a lot of time to examine the pattern and make working notes as there are 6 different motifs. This is the free download for the Mikey's Peppermint Working Notes Booklet.

    Hey Mikey
I’m trying to make this afghan for a friend but I’m struggling with knowing how to put the different motifs together. I have the placement guide but they are numbered 1-42. Can you please help me by sending a placement guide that has the 1-6 motifs. Thanks in advance

The pattern itself has a schematic of the layout I believe. You can find it there if you need it. 🙂
