They are creating a large-scale installation of knit and crochet poppies to drape over the museum's or memorial's exterior. The Crochet Poppy Project is an excellent opportunity for the community to work together on an art installation for Veterans', Memorial, or Remembrance Days.

The poppies take about 7 minutes to make.

  • Updated 2025 Version Crochet Poppy
  • Original 2018 Version Crochet Poppy

We have two patterns. The first is the newest pattern, with updated information about building an installation and a pattern to follow. The second pattern is the original pattern.

Megan McHugh, Nova Scotia, provided extra photography from our local exhibit. Group is the Four Season Fibre Group Poppy Initiative 2023 of the Annapolis Valley. Placed on the Kentville Museum, Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Current 2025 Requests for Help

Claire Laporte is spearheading an exhibit of poppies to be displayed at the 4400-square-foot Cenotaph in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada. The cenotaph is at 3850 Lakeshore Blvd West, Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada.

Cenotaph is a monument to someone buried elsewhere, especially commemorating people who died in a war.

They are looking for different tinges of red to give the illusion of the display in motion. The display will be incorporated with the cenotaph on the side of the building.

Using Cherry Red or bright red with black yarn. Leave the tails to be 10" long so they can tie them to the mesh netting. No tail ends to weave in. You're lucky. The crochet design is by Hania Wojtowicz.

Abbreviations

  • Ch - chain(s)
  • Dc - double crochet
  • Sc - single crochet
  • Sl st - slip stitch
  • (12) - indicates number of stitches at end of round.

With 5 mm / H/8 crochet hook and 4-ply worsted weight yarn like Red Heart Super Saver, Bernat Super Value or Caron One Pound.

Pattern designed by Hania Wojtowicz.

Make a slip knot with a 10” tail and ch 2 in black.

Round 1: 12 dc in second ch from hook. Join with sl st to first dc. Fasten off and leave a 10” tail. (12)

Round 2: Using red yarn, join into the top of any of the black dc leaving a 10” tail. Ch 3 (counts as a dc). 1 dc into the same stitch. 2 dc into each of the remaining dc. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. (24)

Round 3: Ch 1. 2 dc into each of the next 4 dc, sc into next dc. *sc in next dc, 2 dc into each of the next 4 dc, sc in next dc*. Repeat from * to * 2 more times. Join with sl st into bottom of starting ch 1. (40)

Round 4: *2 dc into each of the next 8 dc, slip stitch between the 2 sc of the previous row*. Repeat from * to * three times. Fasten off and leave a 10” tail. (68)

The 4 tails will be used to attach the poppies to the art installation, so do not cut them off or weave them into the poppy.

I live in the United States and would like to know if permission is required to use this poppy pattern and concept for a Memorial Day or Veterans Day display in my local church. It would probably be draped from a small table along with other items representing those days. Thank you.

I wouldn't know that information but you can contact Royal Canadian Legion to ask and request permission. Just state your purpose and more. You can find a contact here: https://www.poppystore.ca/contact
