We've been collecting patterns since 2011, and many patterns have come and gone in trend. The yarn industry is treated as fast fashion, where yarn can come for one season with pattern development. Still, the yarn can be discontinued with complete brands going out of service and/or changing colours. From the ADHD perspective of crocheters and knitters wanting new patterns as often as possible, it's challenging to keep up. As a tutorial host, when I get used to a yarn, the yarn can go out of service. I find myself buying yarn but not getting to the yarn, only to find out that the yarn is discontinued.

Backstory

Mikey began to teach with Yarnspirations in 2015. Yarnspirations had nearly 80 brands with patterns that matched each brand. Brands can come and go quickly, as the obsession with crocheters and knitters means they want patterns so quickly. In the heyday, Yarnspirations developed upwards of 400 free patterns yearly. The designers were focused on the brands that were up and coming. Also, tasked with reviving interest in existing yarns with new pattern teasing.

Yarnspirations was used to remove patterns and any existence of the yarn once it was discontinued. People like Mikey buy yarn with the intention of using it, but by the time he touches it, any patterns that were created are gone. This was a significant problem as Mikey would film tutorials, but once the yarn was discontinued, there were videos showcasing patterns that were no longer available. It caused many problems for creators because the original materials were missing.

By 2018, Yarnspirations started to retain patterns from discontinued yarns in the future. It meant the time invested by creators was no longer wasted.

The Crochet Crowd has many patterns from discontinued yarn and yarn that has lost popularity, but some of us have collections bigger than we can physically crochet. Many patterns have lost their interest, but they are connected with YouTube Tutorials that are still relevant, but only by a few crocheters. It's a shame to archive the tutorials, as most of Mikey's work is in them.
