    Crochet Drunken Scarf Pattern

    Sharing is caring!

The Crochet Drunken Scarf wobbles in one direction before switching directions to wobble back. Over 16 rows, the wobble changes direction, and it's so easy it's not even funny.

I used Bernat Wavelength yarn in the colour called Parfait with my 5.5 mm / I/9 crochet hook.

In the download, you will find the provided crochet diagram.

    Yarn Details

Wobble, wobble goes my scarf in a very easy, quick scarf that arcs in one direction and then switches. With colour transitioning yarn or any yarn for that matter, you can wobble wobble too.

    Bernat Wavelength,  140 g / 5 oz, 204 meters / 223 yards

    • A - Parfait - 2 Balls

    Hook: 5.5 mm / I/9

    Gauge: 6 sc and 7 rows = 2” [10 cm]

    Size: 72” long x 8” wide

TIP: I used stitch markers on the first row of the switch-overs to count the double-crochet rows. There are 16 rows of double crochet before the arc changes spots. It’s easier to keep track, and you don’t need to be obsessed with following the pattern.

Once you are done, you can remove the stitch markers, and no one needs to know how you kept it so perfect.

    Try a Different Scarf

Stitch Along: Crochet Hat, Scarf & Dog Coat + Tutorials

    Instructions

Each section across is 9 sts. Easy to count and easy to see once you understand what you are looking for.

    With A, ch 28.

1st row: 1 sc 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 8 ch. 1 hdc in next 9 chs. 1 dc in the last 9 ch. Turn. 27 sts.

    TIPS

    • Each half-double crochet section remains half-double crochet throughout the scarf. After the 1st row, the half double crochet switches to using half double crochet on the front bar. If you are unsure what that means, you can follow this tutorial to identify the front horizontal bar. It’s what’s giving the texture down the spine of the scarf.
    • What is the half double crochet in the front horizontal bar?

On the diagram, I have highlighted in yellow the half double crochet to show you the half double crochet on the front horizontal bar. As you can see, you cannot do that in the first row, as you are just starting the project.

I hate obsessive counting. On the first row of a changeover in the direction of the arc that happens, I placed a temporary stitch marker so I could easily count. The wobble repeats for 16 rows in one direction, then switches places and wobbles for the next 16 rows in the other direction. Count the double-crochet sections of the rows, as it’s much easier.

First Stitch for Double Crochet Rows = Special Double Crochet (spec dc)

For the first stitch, I didn’t chain 3 as is typical for double crochet. I chained 1, then pulled up a longer loop and double-crocheted into the first stitch to make the edge look better. I can also use stacked single crochet to replace the chain-3. You can decide what you prefer.

In the crochet diagram, I don’t show a ch-3 at the beginning of any double crochet row to indicate I did something unique.

Where is the Horizontal Bar for Half Double Crochet

2nd row: Spec dc in the first st. 1 dc in next 8 dc. 1 hdc frt bar next in next 9 hdc sts. 1 sc in last 9 sc. Turn.

3rd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in first 9 sc. 1 hdc frt bar next in next 9 hdc sts. 1 dc in last 9 dc. Turn.

4th row: Spec dc in the first st. 1 dc in next 8 dc. 1 hdc frt bar next in next 9 hdc sts. 1 sc in last 9 sc. Turn.

    5th to 16th rows: Rep 3rd and 4th rows.

We are now going to switch the edges by changing double crochet to single crochet on one side and single crochet to double crochet on the other to change the arc.

    Counting Rows Tip

Use stitch markers on the start of each section to keep count of the 16 rows you need. Mark the double crochet side of the scarf as the 16 rows are easier to count with the double crochet stitches.

17th row: Spec dc in the first st. 1 dc in next 8 sc. 1 hdc frt bar next in next 9 hdc sts. 1 sc in last 9 dc. Turn.

Place a stitch marker on the row to show you clearly that this is the first row of the new arc.

18th row: Ch 1. 1 sc in first 9 sc. 1 hdc frt bar next in next 9 hdc sts. 1 dc in last 9 dc. Turn.

19th row: Spec dc in the first st. 1 dc in next 8 dc. 1 hdc frt bar next in next 9 hdc sts. 1 sc in last 9 sc. Turn.

20th row: Ch 1. 1 sc in first 9 sc. 1 hdc frt bar next in next 9 hdc sts. 1 dc in last 9 dc. Turn.

    21st to 32nd rows: Rep 19th and 20th rows.

We are now going to switch the edges by changing double crochet to single crochet on one side and single crochet to double crochet on the other to change the arc.

33rd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in first 9 dc. 1 hdc frt bar next in next 9 hdc sts. 1 dc in last 9 sc. Turn.

34th row: Spec dc in the first st. 1 dc in next 8 dc. 1 hdc frt bar next in next 9 hdc sts. 1 sc in last 9 sc. Turn.

35th row: Ch 1. 1 sc in first 9 sc. 1 hdc frt bar next in next 9 hdc sts. 1 dc in last 9 dc. Turn.

36th row: Spec dc in the first st. 1 dc in next 8 dc. 1 hdc frt bar next in next 9 hdc sts. 1 sc in last 9 sc. Turn.

    37th to 48th rows: Rep 35th and 36th rows.

Repeat 17th to 48th rows until you are happy with the length. You can finish at any time. I finished the real sample when I ran out of yarn.
