Designed for my American friends, south of the border (I'm in Canada, eh). Using the inspiration of an existing Red Heart Super Saver Craft Kit. There are 5 different kits in all.
Using only the kit, I developed my own colour strategy, staying within its limits. If. you get this kit, you won't need any more yarn from another source. Please enjoy my Crochet Fireworks Bag Pattern.
If you are substituting yarn, none of the colours will require more than 93 yards (85 metres) to complete it. More pictures are provided in the download.

This bag uses the thermal stitch for the handles. I ran a tutorial on how to do this handle on its own. The blue handle you see in the tutorial is from this bag. I used the same information for the handle length as well.

Base of Bag
The bag is made by starting with a solid double-crochet square, then skipping stitches in the middle of the row to turn the square into a chevron.
I intentionally chose dark colours from the kit, as the bag will likely rest on surfaces.
TIPS:
- The base of the bag is a solid granny square, but the difference in the rounds is strictly colour.
- I tried to maximize the colours used, leaving a small amount of yarn left over.

Body of Bag
In the first round, we are going to establish the indentation that makes the bag a chevron shape. Most of the pattern repeats two rounds, with colour differences.
Begin chevron. You will be skipping 4 sts in the middle of each side to form the valley of the chevron. You will also want to start changing colours to stripes as desired.

Handles - Make 2
Due to yarn consumption, both handles have to be their own colour, as you will run out of yarn.
One handle uses H, and the other uses J. The instructions will maximize most of the yarn ball for each colour.
Thermal Stitch = Insert hook through the back loop only on the current row, and going through the unworked loop from the previous row. Yarn over and pull through both loops. Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops.
With H or J, ch 133.
1st row: WS. 1 sc through one loop only, 2nd chain from hook. 1 sc in one loop only in each ch across. Turn. 132.
TIP: 2nd row is the RS (right side). For a solid colour handle without doing the graphghan version as seen in the rainbow version above, you can end at any time without worry of what is the right or wrong side.
2nd to 7th rows: Ch 1. Thermal stitch across. Turn. 132.
8th row: Ch 1. *1 sc through regular stitch and include unworked stitch from last row (passing through 3 loops. Yarn over pull through 3 loops. Yarn over and pull through rem 2 loops. Rep from * across. Break colour. Weave in the ends.
Sew the handles on the inside of the bag using the same colour as the handles so the interior of the bag looks good. The bottom of the handle should be approximately 2” down from the top point. Take extra time to ensure the sewing is strong.
Stars - Make 4
The handles have to be sewn to the inside of the bag, but this can leave unsightly stitching threads. We want to create four star covers for the outside of the bag. These are just for visual appeal. The stars are 2” across the tips.
With E, ch 2.
1st rnd: 10 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. 10 sc.
2nd rnd: [Ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, skip next sc, slip st in next sc] 5 times. Fasten off and leave a longer tail to sew to the right side of the bag where the handles are located.
When sewing to the bag, surface-sew them into place without letting the yarn go all the way through the bag. This is meant for a design feature and not a structural hold, something in place.
The tips provided show you how to sew on stars to your project without going all the way through it.
