Designed with intention and focused on using only a Red Heart Super Saver Craft Kit. The entire kit will make this Crochet Over-the-Shoulder Rainbow Tote.
The base starts off with the darker colours in the kit, as the bag may be sitting on surfaces. The colour order is subject to your own personal taste. The colours are in order for the Pride rainbow flag.

The bag uses the thermal stitch for the handles. It's much stronger. The handles shown in the tutorial are the same as those on this bag.

Base of Bag
The bag is made by starting with a solid double-crochet square, then skipping stitches in the middle of the row to turn the square into a chevron.
I intentionally chose dark colours from the kit, as the bag will likely rest on surfaces.
TIPS:
- The base of the bag is a solid granny square, but the difference in the rounds is strictly colour.
- I tried to maximize the colours used, leaving a small amount of yarn left over.

Body of Bag
In the first round, we are going to establish the indentation that makes the bag a chevron shape. Most of the pattern repeats two rounds, with colour differences.
Begin chevron. You will be skipping 4 sts in the middle of each side to form the valley of the chevron. You will also want to start changing colours to stripes as desired.

Handles - Make 2
Thermal Stitch = Insert hook through the back loop only on the current row, and go through the unworked loop from the previous row. Yarn over and pull through both loops. Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops.
With C, ch 133.
1st row: WS. 1 sc through one loop only, 2nd chain from hook. 1 sc in one loop only in each ch across. Turn. 132 sc.
TIP: 2nd row is the RS (right side). For a solid colour handle without doing the graphghan version as seen in the rainbow version above, you can end at any time without worry of what is the right or wrong side.
2nd row: Ch 1. Thermal stitch across. Break C. 132 sc.
Starting with the next row, we will use the graphghan format. See tutorial if you need extra help with this.
3rd row:
- With J, attach to first st. Ch 1. 1 thermal stitch for 22 sts.
- With E, 1 thermal stitch for 22 sts.
- With I, 1 thermal stitch for 22 sts.
- With H, 1 thermal stitch for 22 sts.
- With G, 1 thermal stitch for 22 sts.
- With K, 1 thermal stitch for 22 sts.
The colours are now in place. Going forward, use the colour sequence in place to go back across.
4th row: Ch 1. Using thermal stitch with K, K colour for 22 sts, G colour for 22 sts, H colour for 22 sts, I colour for 22 sts, E colour for 22 sts, J colour for 22 sts. Turn.
5th row: Ch 1. Using thermal stitch with J, J colour for 22 sts, E colour for 22 sts, I colour for 22 sts, H colour for 22 sts, G colour for 22 sts, K colour for 22 sts. Turn.
6th row: Rep the 4th row. Break all colours at the end of this row.
7th row: With C, attach to first st. Ch 1. 1 thermal st in each st across. Fasten off.
Weave in all colours to hide the ends.
Sew the handles on the inside of the bag using the same colour as the handles so the interior of the bag looks good. The bottom of the handle should be approximately 2” down from the top point. Take extra time to ensure the sewing is strong.
The picture below shows what they look like once sewn in. I used the grey colour C to sew the handles to the bag.
Curlies - Make 6
Make one each in Cherry Red, Pumpkin, Saffron, Green, Royal Blue and Lavender. You will have enough yarn to make at least 2 more of each colour if you wish to have more on your bag.
With colour, ch 26.
1st row: 3 sc 2nd ch from hook. 3 sc in each ch to the end of the row. Then ch 20. Fasten off, leaving long enough tail to sew.
Wrap the excess chain around the bag handle. Using the long tail, sew the end of the chain to the top of the curl to form a permanent loop around the handle.
