    Red and Blue Long Crochet Elf Hat

    Sharing is caring!

    • Email

    This 25" Long Pom Pom Red and Blue Elf Hat is just for fun for the Christmas season. Designed by Mikey. Using Caron One Pound yarn.

    This will fit an average adult with a tighter brim, as the weight of a long hat can slip off. The 6" Pom Pom was purchased through Amazon.

    The brim is made of Caron One Pound using white and double-stranded with Bernat Pipsqueak white yarn.

    The blue you see is surface overlay crochet that needs to be applied as you go. I will share more about that below.

    What is Surface Overlay?

    The entire body of the hat beyond the brim is half double crochet the spirals right to the end of the hat.

    Surface overlay requires you hand to be behind the surface to pull yarn from the back. It can be ackward if you go too far into the project before you start this.

    I did about 4 rounds of half double crochet and then surface overlayed to catch up to where I was with the half double crochet. It's like a cat and mouse game. You can surface overlay right to the tip of the hat. It gets a little tricky on the last few rounds of the hat, but it's doable without cussing.

    Abbreviations

    Ch = Chain

    Dc = Double Crochet

    Dcbp = Double Crochet Back Post

    Dcfp = Double Crochet Front Post

    Hdc = Half Double Crochet

    Hdc2otg = Half Double Crochet 2 Together

    Sl st = Slip Stitch

    Yarn

    Caron One Pound

    A = White

    B = Bernat Pipsqueak in White

    C = Scarlet

    D - Aqua

    Hook 4.5 mm / G/6 for Brim & 5 mm / H/8 for body of the hat and surface overlay.

    Gauge = 12 sc and 13 rows = 4" [10 cm]

    Instructions

    Using 4.5 mm / G/6 and double stranding both A and B together as one stitch. Ch 64 and join with sl st to beg chain. Careful not to twist chain.

    1st rnd: Ch 1, 1 dc in each st around. Join with sl st to beg dc. 64 dc.

    2nd rnd: Ch 1, 1 dcbp around first post, 1 dcfp around next post. *1 dcbp around first post, 1 dcfp around next post. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to beg dcbp. 64 sts.

    3rd rnd: Rep 2nd round. Finish yarn.

    Body of Hat

    Switch to 5 mm / H/8 crochet hook.

    1st rnd: With D, attach with sl st to the side of the brim. Evenly space 69 hdc, leaving one space st before you would get all the way around the hat. Do not join. Let the yarn rest until you start surfacing overlay with this colour.

    Tip: Don't mix up the yarn strands so they don't tangle.

    2nd rnd: Attach C to the one space you left free. Ch 1, 1 hdc in the same space and 1 hdc over top of the D colour from the row below. Do not join. 70 hdc.

    3rd rnds +: Continue with C with half double crochet for a couple more rounds. 70 hdc.

    Pick up the D colour and surface overlay starting on the C colour at the beginning when it started. Go around the post only for each. Be sure not to be too tight. I would suggest to go only 4 rnds of the Red (Colour C) and then go back and surfacing overlay the rounds you did. I wouldn't surface overlay the last of the section as it's harder to crochet into the top. of the stitches. So you stopping the surface overlay 1 rnd beore you move on. Only surface overlay the last round at the very end of the hat.

    Continue going around until the hat measures 8" from the start of the project.

    Crown of Hat

    I would do each of the rounds suggested and go back and surface overlay before moving on.

    Another Elf Hat

    The spiral hat also works in a continuous spiral so you don't have slip stitching issues. This is the spiral crochet elf hat. It's also using Caron One Pound.
