Mikey's preferred method of making granny squares is demonstrated in the tutorial below.
- With each new round, a new space between the corners will form. In round 4, two spaces were filled between the corners.
- In the next round, there will be three spaces to fill in.
- You can make the square as big as you need and finish. By continually adding more rounds, you could crochet an entire blanket.
Ch 4. Join with sl st to form a ring.
1st rnd: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout. 2 dc in ring. (Ch 2. 3 dc) 3 times in ring. Join using hdc to the top of the beg ch-3.
TIP: Half double crochet join is the equivalent of a chain 2 space. Use that joining hdc as a chain space.
2nd rnd: Ch 3. 2 dc in same hdc join sp. Ch 1. *Sk to next ch-2 corner sp. (3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in ch-2 corner sp. Ch 1. Rep from * twice more. 3 dc in beg corner sp. Join using hdc to the top of beg ch-3.
3rd rnd: Ch 3. 2 dc in same hdc join sp. Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. *(3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in ch-2 corner sp. Ch 1. 3 dc next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. Rep from * twice more. 3 dc in beg corner sp. Join using hdc to the top of beg ch-3.

TIPS: From here, the size of the square can be unlimited.
5th rnd: Ch 3. 2 dc in same hdc join sp. [Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 sp]. Rep [ ] to the corner next corner sp. Ch 1. *(3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in ch-2 corner sp. [Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 sp]. Rep [ ] to the corner next corner sp. Ch 1. Rep from * twice more. 3 dc in beg corner sp. Join using hdc to top of beg ch-3.
6th to 8th rnds: Rep rnd 5.
We will add a single crochet border, which can be added to any round when you are finished. It's optional but provides a better finishing edge.
9th rnd: Ch 1. 3 dc in corner sp. 1 sc in each dc and ch-1 sp to next corner. *3 sc in corner sp. 1 sc in each dc and ch-1 sp to next corner. Rep from * twice more. Join with sl st to beg sc. Fasten off.
Notes
Some crocheters prefer to skip chain one between the groups of 3 double crochets, which tightens the blanket's construction.
- If the granny square folds like a bowl, the crochet hook and tension are too tight for the yarn. Increase your hook size and try again.
- If the square does not sit flat and look like it has a ruffle, it means the hook is too big. Decrease the hook size and try again.
