How to Crochet Baby Shower Blanket + Tutorial

The Crochet Baby Shower Blanket is a nice, easy repeat once you get moving. With a bit of texture, it has enough detail to keep you engaged with the project.

Downloadable now has stitch counts,  as of May 2023.

This blanket looks great in solid colours, so you don't need to mess around with them. However, you can opt to change the colours in different rounds to make certain elements pop off the blanket.

The blanket is 38" x 38" square, and the lovey size is 24" x 24". It has some easy popcorn stitches combined with faux popcorn and v-stitches to tempt your texture desires.

Lovey Size: For parents on the go, sometimes a child cannot part with their blanket, but an option is to make a Lovey Size. It's a miniature sample. My brother, as a young boy, couldn't part with his blanket without a lot of fuss, and it was always a chore to drag it with us. The Lovey can be made with the same yarn, so it gives the illusion that it's the same blanket.

This blanket is pretty fast to crochet and there is a specific note in the pattern to watch for. Keep an eye on Rnds 10 and 11.

We also have this as a rectangle design.

    Inspiration

    Crochet Study of Geometry Afghan
    Crochet Study of Geometry Afghan

Anytime I have made a design, people ask for the rectangle, square, or circle or to change the project using stitch combinations. The inspiration for this baby is the Crochet Study of Geometry Afghan.

Within an hour of previewing this geometry blanket, there were requests to change it to a square option without joining. I decided to hold onto that thought, and finally, when time freed up in July, I went back to the drawing board and evaluated my stitches.

The trick was the math to ensure it stays flat, which it does.

The Baby Shower Blanket was done in the first week of July 2021. I decided to keep it a secret to avoid confusing the summer challenge with this version.

We have two formats for this printed pattern.

The free pattern includes four pages of written instructions, and you can use the tutorial below. The paid pattern comprises a crochet diagram and includes a second diagram to print. It is blown up for easier reading and includes clear photos with the nine-page pattern.

The paid pattern version includes a crochet diagram and blown-up photos with the nine-page pattern. Mikey is struggling with arms, wrists, and hands and is using the money from the paid pattern to help pay for therapy.

    Sizing for Repeats

For the Baby Shower Blanket Full Size = Repeat rnds 8 to 16 twice. Then repeat rnds 8 to 10. Then repeat rnd 12 once.

For the Baby Lovey Size = Repeat rnds 8 to 16 once. Then repeat rnds 8 to 10. Then repeat rnd 12 once.

This blanket can be grown as big as you prefer, you can repeat Rnds 8 to 16 and finish on a 16th rnd at anytime for a nice finishing spot.

I didn't feel it needed one but if you can start with a single crochet round and build out from there.
