Crochet pattern with my USA friends in mind. Knowing the USA is celebrating its 250th anniversary as a country in 2026. Yarnspirations came out with a new colour, Red Heart Super Saver Bitty Stripes called Firework. This is my Crochet Love Letter to USA Blanket pattern.
I felt the Firework colouring was too much to do the blanket all the same colour and an injustice to the yarn. I broke it apart by pulling out my Red Heart Super Saver Red and White balls.
I've met pretty awesome people in the United States during my travels. I wanted to honour my friends and people I have yet to meet, whose creativity is awesome, at any level.

The pattern consists of the crochet wicker stitches and criss-crosses. The use of the two types of stitches prevents colour pooling.

Yarn and Materials
Red Heart Super Saver Bitty Stripes, 283 g/10 oz, 471 meters/515 yards
A - Firework - 2 Balls
Red Heart Super Saver, 198 g/7 oz, 333 meters/364 yards
B - White - 4 Balls
C - Cherry Red - 3 Balls
Hook: 5.5 mm / I/9
Gauge: 13 sc and 14 rows = 4” [10 cm]
Size: 60" x 60"
The pattern is easily repeatable to change the size.
Beg = Begin(ning)
Ch(s) = Chain(s)
Dc = Double crochet
Dc xst = Double crochet cross stitch. Skip next st, double crochet in next st. Double crochet in skipped stitch behind the first stitch.
Ext sc = Extended single crochet. Insert hook into assigned sp, yoh and pull through, yoh and pull through one loop, yoh and pull through 2 loops.
Hdc join = Join certain rounds with hdc to first st (sc or ext sc). This is equivalent to a ch-2 sp corner. When joining new yarn to a corner space, use the hdc post at the join as the ch-2 sp.
Rem = Remain
Rep = Repeat
RS = Right side
Sc = Single crochet
Sk = Skip
Sl st = Slip stitch
Sp(s) = Space(s)
St(s) = Stitch(es)
WS = Wrong side
Extra Tips
JOINING TIP: Half double crochet joins are the equivalent of a ch-2 space. When we need to span a ch-3 space to join, we chain 1, then half double crochet join.
INSTRUCTIONS TIP: Mikey’s rounds start off slightly differently when there is no yarn ball changing over. It’s highlighted in the instructions.
WICKER STITCH = Place 4 double crochets between assigned posts by inserting hook through the posts to the back. Yarn over and pull through the loop, and extend the loop to cover the single crochet row. [Yarn over, pull through 2 loops] twice.
Instructions
1st rnd: RS. With A, ch 4, into 4th ch from hook, 1 dc, [ch 3, 2 dc] 3 times. Ch 1. Hdc join to beg ch. 2 dc per side, 4 ch-3 corners.
2nd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp, *1 sc in each st to corner,** (1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in ch-3 sp; rep from * twice, then from * to ** once, 1 sc in beg sp. Ch 1. Hdc join to beg sc. 4 sc per side.
EXTENDED SINGLE CROCHET TIP: We begin a round with chain 1 to be a builder to give the first extended single crochet stitch more body.
3rd rnd: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as stitch, here and throughout). 2 ext sc in same sp. *sk next 2 sc, 4 dc in between 2 dc (2 rnds) below between the two dc posts in 1st rnd, sk last 2 sc before corner, ** (2 ext sc. Ch 2. 2 ext sc) in ch-3 sp, rep from * twice, then from * to ** once. 2 ext sc in beg sp. Hdc join to beg dc. 8 sts per side.
4th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp, *1 sc in each st to corner,** (1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * twice, then from * to ** once. 1 sc in beg sp. Ch 1. Hdc join to beg sc. 10 sc per side.
TIP: On rounds 5, 7 and 9, the 4 double crochets are placed between the 2nd and 3rd post of the double crochets directly below. - See diagram for clarity.
5th rnd: Ch 1. Ext Sc in same sp (highlighted in red on diagram as it’s unique to keep the stitch counts in balance). *2 ext sc in each of the next 2 sc, sk 3 sc, 4 dc in between the 2nd and 3rd post of the group of 4 dc (2 rnds) below, sk 3 sc, 2 ext sc in each of the next 2 sc before corner,** (1 ext sc. Ch 2. 1 ext sc) in ch-3 sp, rep from * twice, then from * to ** once. 1 ext sc in beg sp. Hdc join to beg ext sc. 14 sts per side.
TIP: The skipped stitches are in red because they're unique to the balance after the 6th rnd. The entire pattern then becomes a 4-round repeat. Notice in the diagram that the first and last extended sc in the round below are skipped.
6th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp, *sk 1 st, 1 sc in next 12 sts, sk last st before corner,** (1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * twice, then from * to ** once, 1 sc in beg sp. Ch 1. Hdc join to beg sc. 14 sc per side.
Begin Pattern Repeat
TIP:
- When you repeat the 7th round in the future, the first wicker stitch will go between the 2nd and 3rd post of the first wicker stitch you will see 2 rnds below. The only time the 7th round will go between the group of the extended single crochets is the first time it’s ever made.
- This is also talked about in the video tutorial.
1st Time Only 7th rnd: With A, attach in any corner sp. Ch 1. 2 ext sc in same sp. *2 ext sc in next sc, 4 dc in between the 2nd and 3rd post of the group of 4 ext sc (2 rnds) below.
