So I thought I would go to my yarn room and collect my Caron Jumbo yarn. Daniel reminded me that we had the moss stitch blanket already done in a pattern we did several years ago. He wondered about mixing it with the variegated concept. So my sample was born.

The idea is to mix as many variegated yarns as possible.

1. Change colour for every row (if you wish).
2. You can be strategic in having the same colours appears in the same order or be random.
3. Weave in the tails as you go to save you time.

For me, it gives me a sense of home and warmth. Growing up in a cottage with a wood stove to heat the house, the blankets on the bed were mismatched quilts my mother had made us. They resemble the look of these.

You can put that yarn that is collecting dust to create one-of-a-kind blankets.

The tutorials used are old tutorials but with the exact same stitch. Change the yarns at the end of each row to something new for that variegated concept. The tutorials are older and don't do that, that's the only difference.

Crochet Cascading Baby Shower Blanket

Designed by Yarnspirations and was once in a crochet pattern book but is released to the public today, free of charge. This was using Bernat Baby Coordinates yarn, which was a #3 Light Weight Yarn. This pattern is double-stranded, meaning you use 2 strands of the same colouring simultaneously. The yarn is discontinued but the pattern is still wonderful.

The stitch multiple to change the sizing is 28 chs + 27 if you want this to be bigger. Each chevron or repeating is 5" across. Essentially 28 chains = 5" in width. This blanket is 36" wide by 36" long.

I found the pattern a bit complex with cutting yarn continuously. I wondered what it could be if you just carry up yarn on the sides and bury it into the edging like we do in today's patterns. I created an alternative version below.

I found the edging not to be as flat in the original, so I changed the ends of the pattern to be single crochet two together (sc2tog).

When you go across the first time on the chain, you will pull up a long loop and let it rest. Go back to the starting of the row again and start row 2 on top of the first single crochet. You only turn the blanket around once two rows are completed.

I considered 2 rows without turning around as 1 set. If you count the cream yarn at the bottom of the photo, you can count 4 rows of white. That's 4 sets.

For fun, I did 2 rows of sky blue to break apart the look. The trick is, do 2, 4, 6 or 8 rows, always an even number.

The next big section is 8 sets (16 rows).

Confirmed Changes

• Don't worry about double stranding, just use 1 strand of #4 medium weight yarn like Caron One Pound or Caron Jumbo yarn.
• I turned the blanket after 2 rows instead when there is two colours in play.
• I carry up the yarn on the side of the blanket instead of cutting the strands.
• The ends are changed to provide a flat edge.

Colours A = Blue Green (spare yarn in the sample)

You can repeat the last 2 rows until your blanket is completed. Recommending for this starting chain to make the length 36" long. Perfect crochet baby blanket size.

Adding in Solid Colour Stripes

Let both of the colour hold on the side of the blanket. Add in another colour.

Back and Forth Rows with Solid Colour: Join with sl st to the top of the first sc at the beginning of last row. Ch 1. Sc2tog over first sc and next ch-1 sp. (Ch 1. Miss next sc. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp) 5 times. Ch 1. *(1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in next ch-2 sp. (Ch 1. Miss next sc. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp) 6 times. **Miss next 2 sc. (1 sc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. Miss next sc) 6 times. Rep from * 3 times more, then from * to ** once more. Last wave (1 sc. Ch 2. 1 sc) in next ch-2 sp. (Ch 1. Miss next sc. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp) 6 times. Miss next 2 sc. You can go back and forth as many times as you want but I highly recommend you keep the solid stripes in even numbers like 2, 4, 6, or 8. When you are done with the solid colour, break the colour and carry up the yarn that is holding to restart again.

The carried-up yarn will be buried into the edging.

Edging Borders: With A, working along side edge of blanket, proceed as follows: Ch 1. 1 sc in side of each sc down side of blanket. Go over any carried yarn so it's inside the stitch. Fasten off.

With A with sl st to first sc on other side of Blanket. Ch 1. 1 sc in side of each sc up side of blanket. Go over any carried yarn so it's inside the stitch. Fasten off
