    Strolling the Garden Crochet Beanie Hat

    The Strolling, The Garden Crochet Beanie Hat, is made from another fancy independent yarn called Malabrigo, Arroyo. The colour is 251 Secret. You can get this type of yarn at Jimmy Beans Wool.

    This yarn is on the thinner side and needs more rounds than the double-knit type of independent yarn. In fact, there are fifty-one rounds in all. Above the brim, I changed the stitch combo to mix the colours before heading into the ribbed edge brim.

    This yarn's mix of colours doesn't provide automatic and noticeable pooling. I like it for that nature on its own.

    How to Check Your Gauge

    The gauge with the 3.5 mm / E/9 crochet hook is provided below.

    Create an Adjustable Circle

    Use only 8 single crochet for the centre of the circle for this hat.

    Size: Average Adult. This will shape your head and fall to the bottom of your earlobes.

    You can make it longer, as you will have nearly a full ball of a second ball, or you can extend it lower by adding more brim. 

    Malabrigo, Arroyo - 100 g / 335 yds

    251 Secret. You need just about 210.

    This yarn is 100% Superwash Merino.

    Hook Size: 3.5 mm / E/9

    GAUGE = 12 and 14 rows = 2”

    Dcbp = Double crochet back post

    Dcfp = Double crochet front post

    Hdcbp = Half double crochet back post

    Hdcfp = Half double crochet front post

    Rep = Repeat

    RS = Right side

    Sc = Single crochet 

    Sc2tog = Single crochet 2 together

    Sl st = Slip stitch

    St(s) = Stitch(es)

    Instructions

    Tips: 

    1. Due to the size of the stitches, it’s easy to skip a stitch accidentally. You may have skipped a stitch by accident if your counts are incorrect. 
    2. The hat is worked in a continuous circle, with the stitch marker at the end of each round moved up to ensure accurate counts. 
    3. The starting of each round is slightly different to prevent the growth of the hat from being obvious. 

    Create an adjustable ring (magic circle). 

    1st rnd: RS. 8 sc in an adjustable ring. 8 sc. Do not join. Work in a continuous round. Place a stitch marker on the last st and continue moving it up after each instruction. 

    2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 16 sc. 

    3rd rnd: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 24 sc.   

    4th rnd: *2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in next 2 sc. Rep from * around. 32 sc. 

    5th rnd: *1 sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 40 sc.  

    6th rnd: *2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in next 4 sc. Rep from * around. 48 sc. 

    7th rnd: *1 sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 56 sc.  

    8th rnd: *2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in next 6 sc. Rep from * around. 64 sc. 

    9th rnd: 1 sc in each st around. 64 sc. 

    10th rnd: *1 sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 72 sc.  

    11th rnd: *2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in next 8 sc. Rep from * around. 80 sc. 

    12th rnd: *1 sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 88 sc.  

    13th rnd: *2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in next 10 sc. Rep from * around. 96 sc. 

    14th to 20th rnds: 1 sc in each st around. 96 sc. 

    Check These Off  14  15  16  17  18  19  20

    21st rnd: *1 sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 104 sc. 

    22nd to 37th rnds: 1 sc in each st around. 104 sc. 

    Check These Off  22  23  24  25  26  27  28  29  30  31  32  33  34  35  36  37

    Tip: For the next section to work, we need an odd number so we need to reduce by 1 stitch to 103 sc. 

    38th rnd: Sc2tog over next 2 sts. *Dcfp around next st, 1 sc in next st. Rep from * around. 103 sts. 

    Tip: Ensure that the single crochet is over top of the dcfp in the round below. 

    39th rnd: *Dcfp around next st, 1 sc in next st. Rep from * around. 103 sts. 

    40th rnd: *1 sc in next st. Dcfp around next st. Rep from * around. 103 sts.

    Rep 39th and 40th rnds 2 more times. Then rep 39th rnd 1 more time. Ending 46th rnd. 

    Tip: We need to get back to an even number. First stitch will have two post stitches around the same stitch to increase by one stitch. 

    47th rnd: (Hdcbp and hdcfp) around same st. *Hdcbp around next st, hdcfp around next st. Rep from * around. 104 sts. 

    48th to 51st rnds: *Hdcbp around next st, hdcfp around next st. Rep from * around. 104 sts. 

    Finishing off: Sl st in next 2 sts and fasten off.
