Crochet Fair Isle Wool Cowl Pattern + Tutorial

With the help of artificial intelligence, I asked it to create a stitch combination that transitions colour over ten stitches in a repeating pattern of 50 stitches. Without knowing in advance if it was right, I just stitched out the combination it gave me, and boy, oh boy, am I loving it. You can download or print the pattern here; it includes extras like photos, a chart and written tips to ease your process.

While the pops of colour appear to be random, of course, there is a mathematical sequence at play here. The yarn choices and sizing is something I had to figure out before I could ask AI to step in and show me a sample.

I did try using AI for another sequence, but it wasn't understanding my requests to pop another sample out. So as good as AI can be, there is still room for creativity and improvisation that a machine cannot yet do.

Of course, I created the diagram shown below as AI just gave me things like A, A, A, A, B, B, A, A, A, A. So I had to determine if I was reading it from right to left or left to right. In my case, it didn't matter as the sequence for what I was doing was stable.

    Abbreviations

    • Beg = Begin(ning)
    • Ch(s) = Chain(s)
    • RS = Right Side
    • Sl st = Slip Stitch
    • Sp(s) = Space(es
    • Splsc = Split single crochet: work sc between ‘legs’ at front and back of stitch (splitting stitch) instead of through top loops. Aka Waistcoat Stitch
    • St(s) = Stitch(es)
    • Yoh = Yarn Over Hook

    Instructions

With A, ch 50. Careful not to twist the chain. Sl st to beg ch to form ring.

1st rnd: RS. Do not chain. 1 sc in each stitch around. Do not join. 50 sc.

    Tip

You will now continue in a continuous round, meaning you are not joining at the end of each round. However, you will want to keep an eye on the end of each round. Use a stitch marker on the last stitch and keep moving it up each time you go around.

It’s easier to follow this concept as a graph. While it appears to lack structure, it’s thoroughly planned from start to finish.

    Carrying the Unused Colour

You will carry the yarn on the underside of the stitches. The split single crochet favours the front of the project, and the carried yarn stays under the stitches on the back side.

Remember: when changing colour and you need the next stitch to be a solid colour, the final pull-through of the last stitch must be the new colour.

To change colour, work to the last two loops on the hook and draw the new colour through the last two loops, then proceed in the new colour.

    Visual Photographic Tutorial

Carry the unused yarn inside the other stitch. Do not be too tight to change the structure of the cowl. The carried yarn stays on the backside of the stitch and doesn’t show through.

When you need to change colour, the final pull-through of the last stitch must be in the new colour, as the loop on the hook is the ‘roof’ of the next stitch. It needs to be in place so the stitch keeps the colour pure. The other colour is then placed on the top of the row and carried inside the stitches of the new colour. Unused yarn strands are not loose behind the work.

    Chart Reading Tips

The charts are not hard to read, but you may have dyslexia. Look for patterns of how many stitches are in a row, and if you notice, many of the stitches in the yellow below are grouped in twos.
