A summer pattern that makes sense is the 100% Recycled Cotton using Caron Layer Cupcakes yarn. One ball creates one hat, nearly using the entire ball, but if you follow the gauge, you won't have issues with yarn chicken (meaning running out of yarn). This is the Crochet Happy Days Bucket Hat pattern.
Using cotton yarn for applications like this allows your skin to breathe in the heat. Unlike acrylic, which can retain heat and be too hot to wear, cotton yarn allows your skin to breathe in the heat.
This is sized so that adults can yield as much of the yarn out of the ball as possible.

The pattern is super easy to follow, and if you don't have a lot of time, it's perfect. You can follow the instructions below.

Instructions
Caron Layer Cupcakes, 125 g/4.4 oz, 151 meters/165 yards
A = Bubblegum
- 1 Hat takes almost one whole ball. You will not be playing yarn chicken if the gauge is followed.
Hook: 6 mm / J/10
Gauge: 13 hdc and 10 rows = 4”
Size: Average Adult
Abbreviations
- Approx = Approximate(ly)
- Beg = Begin(ning)
- Ch = Chain(s)
- Hdc = Half Double Crochet
- Join = Slip stitch to top of beg hdc.
- Rep = Repeat
- RS = Right Side
- Sl St = Slip Stitch
Notes:
- Chain 2 at the beginning of a round doesn’t count as a stitch.
- The tutorial that matches this hat uses a continuous spiral, so there is no slip stitching to prevent seamlines. If you are doing continuous spirals, ignore the joining and chain 2 at the beginning of the instructions.
