Big Wheel Crochet Afghan Pattern + Tutorial

Introducing the Bernat Blanket Big Wheel Crochet Afghan. It uses one of my favourite variegated colours of Bernat Blanket called Silver Steel.

This afghan is made with Bernat Blanket Yarn, which is chenille and really thick. To make this generous 50" x 60" afghan, you will need a total of 6 - 300 gram balls.

You can substitute the Bernat Blanket with the Bernat Baby Blanket, as the yardage and weight are the same. This will give you far more colour options too. This type of stitch is a big yarn eater, so be prepared for more yarn than you may expect if you are substituting or changing the size.

    The Stitch Multiple

To change the size, the stitch multiple is 10 chains + 7.

I am assuming you want to make this afghan with 3 colours instead of 2. You could most likely get 2 balls of 3 colours instead of 3 balls of 2 colours. Of course, if you want to make your afghan bigger, you just have to add more yarn.

This afghan is very similar to the Catherine Wheel Stitch. There's a slight change in the number of chains between the centre points and the single crochets. It's extended by 1 extra chain, so it will sit properly.

Because this blanket is made with Bernat Blanket Yarn, it will go super quickly to make.

What would be good deminsions/stitch count to make this a baby afghan?

My rows are seeming to pucker a lot. I have tried to hold the yarn very loose, but it still seems to pucker. Does it stop puckering once you get further along ? I have started over twice after row 3.

I would like to make this afghan a lot wider. I saw in an earlier post that it was 10 +7. So would I just add multiples of 10 + 7(at the end)? Or multiples of 17?

You just count to 10 over and over until it's wide enough, then add 7 extra chains. 🙂

Jeanne, Thanks so much for the multiples information. I am going to modify this for a baby blanket using the couples favorite Hockey team colors.
