Surprising Realisation about Knitting Tension... Is It YOU?

Before I started The Crochet Crowd, I tried knitting a rainbow scarf for myself. It turned out great, but the scroll on the edges was unbelievable. It was the stockinette stitch.

Since opening The Crochet Crowd, I realized the edges have to be opposite to each other to create the look you see but noticed that the scroll is still happening.

Is it me? I wondered if my tension was too tight or something.

I contacted my mentors at Yarnspirations to inquire. I have done my edges right but the edging is still scrolling. I wondered if the knitting needle is the wrong size.

PS. The yarn you see is Red Heart Jumbo Stripes in the Neon Stripe colour.

    The Answer

Like Tunisian, there is tension on the front side of the project, which is the good side that you see. In Tunisian, the scroll happens from top to bottom but in the knitting needles, it's from side to side.

The project must be 'blocked' at the end to have it sit flat.

Yarnspirations also said they tend not to design scarves with exclusively stockinette stitches for this reason alone. They tend to add texture stitches, so the scrolling is never an issue.

The scroll is the natural formation of the tension that happens. You may want to wet block or lightly hit it with some steam. Lay flat and dry. Once materials like acrylic are blocked once, you shouldn't have to block it again.

If you are using other materials, such as animal fibres, you will have to block them each time you wash them.
