Quick Blanket Choices Tutorials
We have 6 crochet baby blankets that are the favorites of crocheters. They range from absolute beginners to an heirloom piece.
#1 Crochet Coastal Sea Glass Baby Blanket
The Crochet Coastal Sea Glass Baby Blanket was created in 2026 and is quickly becoming a go-to favorite from Crochet Crowd. It has easy repeats, and with the right yarn, such as Bernat Harmony yarn, it really does an amazing job color-wise. Right- and left-handed tutorials are available for this blanket to guide you.
#2 Crochet Call The Midwife Blanket
Developed in the 1980s but under the Beehive label of Yarnspirations, this vintage classic is well received by crocheters. It has a bit of filet crochet, with stitches combined to create an interesting middle in each square. This type of blanket can be any size. This is the Call The Midwife Baby Blanket. This video tutorial, available below, is in both right- and left-handed formats.
#3 Crochet Hugs and Kisses Baby Blanket
The Crochet Hugs & Kisses Baby Blanket is the all-time favorite of The Crochet Crowd. Its rich texture, easy repeating, and the fact that it's not a straight-across blanket seem to appeal to crocheters. There is a right- and left-handed tutorial included to show you the way.
There is also a secondary option for this blanket, straight across, called the Crochet Little Boy Blue Blanket. Same texture and easy to repeat without the wave look. There are right- and left-handed tutorials to follow.
#4 Crochet Modern Granny Baby Blanket
Developed in 2016, this Crochet Modern Granny Baby Blanket was updated in 2025 by adjusting the start of each round to make it easier to follow and create a more relaxed flow. With self-striping yarn like the sample, it can be really awesome the way it finishes up. Both right- and left-handed tutorials are ready for you to stitch it up immediately.
#5 Crochet Baby Diamonds Blanket
The Crochet Baby Diamonds Blanket is made using my favorite Bernat Blanket yarn. It crochets really quickly and has a bit of a design in the center without being too hard to create. The center has filet crochet that forms outward-looking diamonds, and once that is complete, it's a straight shot right to the end of the blanket. You can watch the right- or left-handed tutorials.
#6 Crochet Baby Shower Blanket
The Crochet Baby Shower Blanket, designed by Mikey, is a favorite for its texture and the pattern's ease. It has a repeating pattern that is quick to follow through, and just adding a ribbon or gift wrap to the blanket makes for a great gift. You can follow the right or left-handed tutorials right now to start.
Similar to Baby Shower Crochet Blanket BUT for Adults
If you love Bernat Blanket, you may love my Crochet Study of Snow Blanket. It has a similar vibe to the baby shower blanket but is meant for extra cuddles and big kids like me. You can follow the right- or left-handed tutorials.

Start Here - What Yarn To Choose?

The yarn aisle can be intimidating, and what we think are great choices may be detrimental to a new crocheter's skill-building and to the baby's health.
Look for acrylic, cotton, polyester, or a mix of the three together. Of the three choices, polyester is the cheapest to make and generally the least expensive. However, you can feel the difference between polyester and acrylic. Give it a feel and see what you think. Acrylic is made to react like wool, but without the wool content.
TIP: Never choose an animal-fiber-based yarn, as you will never know whether the baby is allergic. Animal fibers tend to be more expensive due to the process of harvesting wool, and the risk of a skin reaction makes them a definite red flag.
A great stable and long-lasting choice is Bernat Blanket yarn. Not only is OEKO-Tex tested for harmful chemicals, but the properties of the chenille polyester also make the yarn lock onto the stitches much better than brands like Bernat Blanket. Best of all, it's so thick that a baby blanket for an experienced crocheter may take about 3 to 4 hours to make at the required size. It only takes 3 balls of this yarn.
There are a slew of brands out there that are decent for baby blankets, like Red Heart Super Saver, Caron One Pound, or Bernat Super Value, to name a few. Being manufactured by a trusted manufacturer, the quality is tested. Each has its advantages.
There's a Catch to Bernat Blanket?
Bernat Blanket yarn has several sub-brands. Bernat Blanket is the same yarn as Bernat Baby Blanket. Different colorways are labeled as extension brands. However, Yarnspirations has kept the yarn yardage similar across options so you can easily mix and match the colors. Take a quick look here to see all the Bernat Blanket Patterns available in different colorways.

Even though manufacturing costs have increased over time because yarn is closely tied to the fuel industry, the lengths of the balls have remained the same rather than reducing ball sizes to keep pricing the same. So yes, as time goes on, yarn prices do increase, but that's due to global factors tied to the world economy.
Doing this practice allows crocheters to collect yarn and mix and match it later.
Choose by the Need
The Crochet Fluffy Meringue Baby Blanket is elevated in baby-blanket looks and sometimes makes for a better 'moment' for a parent to have with their child. Maybe a baby christening, or the first time the baby sees their new family members.
Though this blanket resembles the Crochet Virus Shawl, it predates the shawl by several years. This blanket can be any size, as it grows equally on all four sides. So don't limit yourself to thinking this is just for the little ones. This particular concept requires an intermediate level of skill for crocheters to follow.
I wouldn't get hung up on the idea that complicated is better. Apply your own special meaning to it, and rest easy with the thought and handwork you put into it.

Guide: How Much Yarn Do You Need For A Baby Blanket
The baby blanket is generally 30" to 40" in both width and length. If it goes too big, it's too much of a hassle for the parent. Children can get attached to a baby blanket, and a great option is to create a secondary blanket called a Crochet Lovey. It's a similar-looking blanket, and you can just do a few rounds to it. It saves you having to lug the real baby blanket when you are in a crunch
The Baby Blanket Yardage Guide provides average yardage for different yarn thicknesses, based on yarn weight classification.
If you are doing your own pattern or concept, this guide is very helpful, so you can get the yarn you need to start and finish without making a second trip or placing another order.

Learn & Improve Stitch Library
If this is your first time, baby blankets usually have the power to motivate you to meet a deadline. Since it's a smaller project than other things you can make, experienced crocheters tend to fall back on baby blankets for charity drives and much more.
With each project you finish, you feel accomplished, and some crocheters like to color outside the lines and go out on their own without a pattern. Thousands of choices await you in the Crochet Video Stitch Library. Surf through and discover. Each one has a tutorial to guide you.
The only way to truly learn is to practice.

More Baby Projects to Add To The Blanket
If you would like something more to go with this blanket, we have hats, sweaters, nursery decor, and toys. A bit of this and that. A nice pair of baby booties in the wearables section is pretty sweet, too. Check out the options for accessorizing the blankets.

Frequently Asked Questions
Washing After Project is Made Tips

Some yarns like Red Heart Super Saver can feel abrasive to the touch. It's marketed as a cheaper yarn because it's less processed than yarn like Red Heart With Love, which is a premium-grade yarn. If you're buying for a baby, you may want to consider the Red Heart With Love, but because the balls look similar, crocheters may not notice the difference in quality. But let's face it, many consumers are driven by the bottom-line price. I am, too.
Tips to Make It Softer
Follow the washing instructions on the ball band label as a first step. If machine washable, do as follows:
- Wash the finished item in a gentle cycle in cool to warm water.
- Add a small amount of mild detergent to break up anything on the yarn that should come off.
- Do an extra rinse cycle to remove any detergent buildup.
- Tumble dry on low heat if permitted on the ball band.
- Each time you wash it, it will get softer as the fibers relax.
Do not use fabric softener, and do not use an iron or any heat source on man-made fibers such as acrylic or polyester, or any material that is 'poly-based'.
Do not wash the balls prior to use, as you risk the yarn not drying inside the ball. Yarn that isn't fully dry will mould and should be thrown out if this happens.
Animal Fibers Used in Baby Blankets?
Not all animal fibers react to skin equally. While wool has barbs on the fiber that lock onto itself, it's those barbs that can cause a skin reaction, not necessarily an allergy. Learn more about wool here.
Other animal fibers, such as goat hair (typically called cashmere) and Angora rabbit hair, have properties more like human hair. However, you can still be allergic.
For the baby's safety until you know more about the baby's well-being, it is best to stick to cotton, acrylic, or polyester.
Do Not Use Yarn That's Been In Smoke
Yarn absorbs odours from its surroundings. Some smells wash out, but cigarette smoke and fire smoke leave an oily residue that can soak deep into the fibres and may never disappear completely.
This is the same residue that stains the walls of a smoker’s home. It can transfer to yarn through smoky air or from a smoker’s hands. While washing and deodorizing may reduce the smell, heavily contaminated yarn is difficult to clean without damaging its colour or fibres.
SHOPPING TIP: Always smell second-hand yarn before buying it. If it smells of smoke, assume the odor may remain.
Personally, I politely decline yarn that has been stored in a smoking environment. I don’t want the smell or residue transferring to my other yarn, clothing, furniture, or hands.
Even if the project isn’t intended for a baby, consider whether the yarn is worth accepting. Smoke residue may remain on the yarn and transfer to other surfaces while you crochet.
