All new approaches and patterns for Crochet Modern Granny are in rectangular format. This is the Blanket 2025 Rectangle Modern Granny Baby Blanket pattern.
In looking at the 2016 crochet pattern from The Crochet Crowd, the corners don't do it justice when using colour transitioning yarn. The slip stitching to the corner to start each round can be very in-your-face. Re-imagined with a new approach.
This design change will also allow you to go as big as you need to be. Stop when you are feeling like it. If you do this design a bit bigger, you will have a palliative care-sized lap blanket too.

People generally enjoy colour transitioning yarn such as this Caron Colorama Halo yarn ball that is a whopping 500 g / 17.6 oz. Just one ball needed for a baby blanket.

Changing the corner starting and finishing locations does a better job. It feels seamless.

TIPS
The change is to start the round at a different position and finish the rounds with a (Ch 1 and half double crochet join) to the top of the first stitch. The Ch 1 + hdc is the equivalent of a ch-3 sp. The half-double crochet leaves the crocheter in the right position to start the next round.
I reduced the hook to a 4 mm / G/6 crochet hook but intentionally so the stitches are tighter and showcase the stitch definition really well.
