Crocheting and Crafting with Friends
Do you think of crocheting as a social event for you and friends? Even though I spend many hours at home crocheting every evening, I love to spend time with a group of friends once a month to crochet and craft together. It has become a favorite social event of mine every month.
My group started about 15 years ago as scrapbooking group but has transitioned over the years to all types of crafts including crochet. This is not a formal guild, but just friends who get together the second Wednesday of every month to have dinner and then spend 3 hours enjoying crafts. We love sharing ideas and teaching each other something new about our craft. Lately I have been able to teach crocheting to a few of them and it is so much fun to share.
This past weekend, some of this group of friends got together for an informal 3 day retreat in the middle of nowhere, Indiana. We rented a crafting getaway house which houses 10 people with tables, lights and comfy chairs. We brought in our own food and took turns preparing meals in the full kitchen.
We crocheted, loomed, scrapbooked and one person even did some quilting. We ate and laughed and just enjoyed each others company without the worries of day to day life at home. I personally even disconnected myself from the internet for 2 whole days. It was a wonderfully relaxing time for all.
Anyone who thinks crochet is just for grandmas, needs to think outside the box and find some friends who share the love of crafting. We can all share the fun even if we don’t share the same craft. But either way, sharing ideas with others that also love and appreciate something handmade is very heartwarming and rewarding.
