Free Crochet Baby Blanket 2025 - Modern Granny with Diagram & Tutorial

What if the crochet corners can be changed to modern granny to avoid slip stitching and slightly alter the colour sequence? For experienced crocheters, this could be a deal-breaker.

I re-imagined the corners of the modern granny stitch, changing the starting points and finishing methods. I also noticed that the corners buckle slightly on the double crochet rounds.

TIPS

The change is to start the round at a different position and finish the rounds with a (Ch 1 and half double crochet join) to the top of the first stitch. The Ch 1 + hdc is the equivalent of a ch-3 sp. The half-double crochet leaves the crocheter in the right position to start the next round.

I reduced the hook to a 4 mm / F/6 crochet hook but intentionally so the stitches are tighter and showcase the stitch definition really well.

Red Heart Super Saver Bitty Stripes (283 g/10 oz, 471 meters/515 yards)

A - Rainbow Mist - 2 Balls

Hook: 4 mm, US. F/6 crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Match the hook to the yarn ball band recommendation if substituting.

Gauge 15 sc and 15 rows = 4” [10 cm]

Baby Blanket Size: 37” x 37.

Abbreviations
